Important: Instructions For In-Person Classes

Check-In Procedure & Orientation:

  • Check-in will start 30 minutes before the class start time. Please have your photo ID with you in order to check in. If you are not present prior to the class start time you will not be allowed to check-in.

  • If you cannot attend your class, please call the NCBI office at (919) 676-9090 to reschedule to one of our many virtual classes.

  • At the conclusion of each class you will be asked to sign the class roster. If you are not present and do not sign the roster, you will not receive credit for the class.

Schedule & Breaks:

The requirement of a 10-minute break for every 50 minutes of instruction will apply.

We will strictly adhere to the time requirements to keep the classes running on time.

IMPORTANT – please be sure to return to class immediately after the 10-minute break so that you can receive credit for the class. Attendance will be monitored throughout the class.

Enforcement & Eviction Policies:

The NCBI Moderator has the authority to evict a student if they cannot comply with the policies listed both in the information above.

If you have any questions concerning these policies, please contact the NCBI office at (919) 676-9090 and speak with an NCBI staff member or email Alison Barnes at abarnes@nchba.org.

Frequently Asked Questions

If you have questions concerning your account, how to register for classes, what to expect in a live virtual class or other questions please see our answers to these common topics below. If you still need assistance, please call us at (919) 676-9090 and an NCBI staff member will be happy to assist you. You may also contact us by sending an email to Patti Najarian pnajarian@nchba.org.

1) What are live virtual classes? What should I expect?

NCBI conducts our live virtual classes via the Zoom video conferencing tool. How does a live virtual class work? It’s simple. Two days before your class date, we’ll send you a link to join via Zoom. On the day of your class, click the link, join with your microphone and camera turned on, a moderator will check you in and you’re all set.

NOTE: the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors requires students to have proper technology and equipment to reliably access live virtual classes. At a minimum, this includes:

  • A computer or other device with camera and microphone capabilities (student connection via cell phone is not allowed)
  • Broadband internet access with a strong internet connection capable of maintaining connectivity
  • Software requirements (i.e. operating system, browser, etc.)

2) Can I fulfill all 8 of my required Continuing Education (CE) credit hours in one day?

Yes, you can fulfill all 8 hours of your CE requirement IN ONE DAY through live virtual classes with NCBI. The 8-hour CE requirement includes a two-hour mandatory class with information about changes in the laws and rules and other content applicable to general contracting while the remaining 6 hours are divided into two- and four-hour elective courses. Every day we offer classes, our instructors teach three consecutive courses consisting of a total of 8 credit hours. It’s up to you whether you want to take all eight hours (three classes) in one day or split it up and only take one or two classes. The choice is yours!

3) Will NCBI report my continuing education credit to the NCLBGC?

Yes. Our staff reports your credit hours to the NCLBGC within 7 days of your class.

4) Where do I find my Qualifier ID number?

Separate from your license number, you will need your qualifier number to register for classes. Your qualifier number can be found on the NCLBGC website homepage by scrolling down and using the “Licensee and Qualifier Search” feature.

5) How do I create an account to sign up for classes?

From our homepage click the log-in button highlighted in the photo below, or, click here to create a new account. Once the log-in page loads, new users will need to click the orange “click here” button to create an account. IMPORTANT: you will receive an email to confirm your new account. Click the link in that email to finish setting up your account. This step is critical. You will not be able to access your account and sign up for classes until this step has been completed.

Live Virtual Classes

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the North Carolina Licensing Board for General Contractors has voted to allow live virtual learning classes in addition to in-person classes for general contractors to satisfy their required eight hours of continuing education (CE) for license renewal. We have recently added additional live virtual classes to our course offerings.

Start Here To Fulfill Your Continuing Education (CE)

You can now search for General Contractor Continuing Education (CE) classes being held near you, add them to your cart and securely pay online. These classes count towards fulfilling your Continuing Education (CE) requirement for General Contractor license renewal. Completed coursework also counts towards a designation. Click here to learn more about NCBI’s designations program.

A few important first steps:

  1. If you have not already set up your account, please click here to learn how to reset your password.
  2. If, for some reason, your email address is not already in our system, you will be able to create an account once in the student portal.

To log-in to the student portal, follow the instructions below

Click the log-in button (highlighted below) from the home screen
You will see the page below. Once you have entered your email address and password, click the “Login” button
Once you are logged in, you will see a menu along the left-hand column of your screen that displays a “Shop” option:
When you click “Shop” you will arrive at the “Upcoming Courses” page that displays information such as course title, date, time, location, instructor and price. See steps below to search, select courses and checkout:
1) You may search classes by location using the filters to the left. Note: the site defaults to show all courses and locations. If you wish to narrow your search, select a few locations with check marks and click the “Apply Filters” button.
2) At the bottom of each course listing there is a blue button to either “Add To Cart” or “Go To Website”. In the case of the latter, this means that a local HBA is administering this course and so you must register through an external website. For classes offered by the North Carolina Builder Institute, you will simply click “Add To Cart”.
3) Once you have finished selecting classes, proceed to checkout. (IMPORTANT: Are you a member of the North Carolina Home Builders Association? Click here for instructions about adding your member PIN to your account.)
Questions?
Thank you for your patience as we continue to tweak our site and make signing up for classes as easy as possible. Please reach out if you have questions about NCBI or how to register! Contact Alison Barnes by email or call (800) 662-7129.
